The Power of a Great Call to Action

Whether it’s on your website, in your newsletter, or tucked at the end of a social media post, every piece of marketing should answer one key question:

“What do you want your audience to do next?”

This is your Call to Action, or CTA for short, and it’s one of the most powerful tools in your marketing toolkit.

What Is a CTA (and Why Does It Matter)?

A CTA is simply a prompt that encourages your audience to take action. It might ask them to buy a product, book a session, join your newsletter, share a post, or even just comment below.

Think of it as your way of saying, “Here’s what to do next.”

You’ve shared something valuable, your audience has read it, watched it, or liked it… But then what? Without a CTA, even your best content may fall flat.

If you don’t tell them where to go next, they’ll probably just keep scrolling.

What Makes a Good CTA?

A strong CTA feels natural and inviting, not pushy. It guides your audience forward, without making them feel like they’re about to sign a contract.

Let’s be real, “Click Here,” “Sign Up,” or “Read More” don’t exactly make people excited. They sound like work.

Instead, try something that feels more personal, helpful, or fun:

  • “Get Inspired” instead of “Read More”
  • “Start Your Free Trial” or “Try it Out for Free” instead of “Sign Up”
  • “Discover How” instead of “Learn More”
  • “Find My Next Favourite Dress” instead of “Shop Here”

These kinds of CTAs are friendly, action-oriented, and easy to say yes to.

Button Design Matters Too

CTAs aren’t just about the words.
The design and placement matter just as much.

A button that jumps off the page (visually and emotionally) will always perform better than one that blends into the background.

Try using a contrasting colour for your button. Choose something that grabs attention but still fits your brand vibe. Having multiple buttons is a great way to change the question from “will they click the button” to “which button will they click?”.

If you’re using more than one button, make the one you most want them to click stand out. Strategic placement and colour contrast will help guide your audience’s eye and cursor exactly where you want it to go.

Test, Tweak, Repeat: A/B Testing Your CTAs

Here’s where things get even more clever.

A/B testing is a simple way to see what’s really working. You create two versions of a CTA and test them against each other. Keep it scientific with the same audience, same goal, and just one change.

That one change might be:

  • Different wording (“Join Us” vs. “Let’s Go!”)
  • Different colour or placement
  • A button vs. a text link

The key? Only test one element at a time.
That way, you know exactly which change made the difference.

Those tiny tweaks can have a big impact on your click-throughs and conversions. We’ll talk more about A/B testing in a future blog post, so keep an eye out!

Your Social Media Posts Need CTAs Too!

Every post you share should have one clear purpose and one clear action that you want your audience to take. This can be in the text of your post description or actually spoken to your audience in your video.

It doesn’t matter which platform you’re on; your CTA helps turn passive viewers into active participants. So don’t leave them hanging. Tell them what to do next!

Here are a couple of fun and effective ways to do it:

Make it interactive.
Instead of ending your post with a plain “link in bio,” try something more engaging like: “Comment ‘Purple Frisbee’ and we’ll send you the link in your DMs.”

Connect it to an automation tool like ManyChat, so it happens seamlessly. This method feels playful, boosts your engagement, and makes it easier for your audience to follow through. People are far more likely to drop a quick comment on a post they’re already viewing than to go hunting for your link.

Use the problem-solution formula.
A simple framework for writing powerful CTAs is: “If you [problem/desire] and you want [solution], then you should [contact us / click here / sign up].”

It’s personal, conversational, and helps your audience instantly connect the dots between what they need and how you can help.

Your CTA = The Bridge Between Attention and Action

A strong call to action turns interest into results.
It’s how you move your audience from “That’s nice” to “I’m in.”

As you plan your marketing for the new year, take a close look at your CTAs. Are they clear, inviting, and easy to say yes to? Or are they just… there?
