At CleverCalicco, we help small businesses feel lighter. Through practical marketing support, honest strategy, and collaborative partnerships, we help clients work smarter, grow sustainably, and build businesses they actually enjoy running. We believe success should support people, not consume them.

To back that up, my blogs are usually packed with practical tips about digital marketing, social media strategy, SEO, and email marketing. This month, however, I thought it might be nice to pull back the curtain and talk about something a little more foundational:

What kind of business am I actually trying to build?

If I’m asking clients to think intentionally about their brands, it only feels fair that I do the same.

There Has to Be a Better Way to Do Business

Maybe it’s because I’ve worked with so many small business owners. Maybe it’s because I’ve watched friends and colleagues burn themselves out trying to “hustle harder.” Or maybe it’s because I’ve seen firsthand what happens when businesses prioritize ego and endless growth over people.

Whatever the reason, I keep coming back to the same conclusion: there has to be a better way.

I don’t necessarily mean an easier way… even though I am always looking for ways technology can make things easier for us. In this case, I mean a gentler, more sustainable way of doing business.

I want to believe businesses can grow without treating people like they’re disposable. I’m not interested in building a business where the ultimate purpose is funding my future yacht club membership. I’m not in it for ego. No, what I’m interested in is building something more meaningful than that; something rooted in trust and collaboration, where success is shared. That’s why I am building a people-centred business.

Success Should Support People, Not Consume Them

There are a lot of messages out there telling entrepreneurs that success means constantly pushing harder, scaling faster, and squeezing every ounce of productivity from themselves and, perhaps more notably, from everyone around them.

That has never resonated with me.

I don’t believe burnout is a badge of honour. I don’t believe leadership means having all the answers. And I definitely don’t believe one person’s success should come at everyone else’s expense.

Instead, I believe in:

  • earned confidence over ego
  • collaboration over hierarchy
  • sustainable work over burnout
  • shared expertise and meaningful work
  • profit as a means to support fair pay, learning, long-term stability, and good work

In other words, people come first. Profit helps sustain the work, not the other way around.

Long-Term Relationships Matter More Than Quick Wins

In marketing, there can be a lot of pressure to chase the next client, the next trend, or the next shiny thing. And obviously, in my industry, it’s important to stay current with trends and emerging technology. You can bet I’m doing that.

But when it comes to chasing quick wins at the expense of relationships, I’m far more interested in building trust.

In an industry where very little remains evergreen, trust does. Trust creates loyalty, referrals, and the kind of business relationships that people actually enjoy being part of. That applies to clients, and it applies to colleagues too.

Success isn’t just about how many people say yes. It’s about how you treat them after they’ve trusted you enough to say yes.

The Core Values Behind CleverCalicco

Trust Above All Else

Trust is earned through honesty, reliability, and follow-through. Relationships matter more than transactions, and we treat the trust our clients place in us as something sacred.

Clarity Creates Confidence

Marketing shouldn’t feel overwhelming or mysterious. We want people to understand what matters, what doesn’t, and what to do next so they can make confident decisions.

People Over Extraction

Sustainable work matters. Businesses thrive when the people behind them are respected, supported, and able to do meaningful work without sacrificing themselves in the process.

Collaboration Makes Better Work

Great ideas don’t come from one person having all the answers. Diverse perspectives, shared expertise, and collaboration create stronger outcomes for everyone involved.

Care With Accountability

Being supportive doesn’t mean avoiding hard conversations. We believe in kindness, clear expectations, ownership, and doing what we say we’ll do.

Progress Over Perfection

Done thoughtfully beats done perfectly. Progress creates momentum, and momentum creates growth.

Success Should Feel Sustainable

Growth shouldn’t come at the expense of health, relationships, or integrity. We want businesses—and, most importantly, the people behind them—to thrive for the long term.

Building a People-Centred Business

As CleverCalicco grows, my hope is to build a collaborative, people-centred organization where the people doing the work have a voice in shaping it, clients receive thoughtful and accountable support, and success is measured by more than revenue alone.

Growth matters. Relationships matter too.

I believe businesses can be profitable, people-centred, and genuinely supportive.

And I intend to prove it.
